Isla Holbox (pronounced hol-BOSH, meaning “black hole” in Maya) is a tropical paradise, lying just 6 miles off the north coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It’s the perfect getaway for anyone who wants to get off the grid. No paved roads, almost no cars, just miles and miles of pristine undeveloped beaches. At just 26 miles long and one mile wide, guests can easily get around by renting bikes and golf carts. This tiny island has plenty of room to roam.
Coming Soon! St Somewhere Resort
Visitors who seek a little more luxury won’t have to wait much longer. Margaritaville Resorts & Spas and Karisma Resorts have teamed up to develop the new hotel brand, St Somewhere Resort, a Jimmy Buffet inspired boutique resort hotel slated to open in the fall of 2021.
Something for everyone
What it lacks in size, Holbox makes up for in authentic Mexican charm. The tiny island has a nice laid-back feel, yet plenty to appeal to visitors with more than 50 restaurants and bars – many open-air, small hotels and family-run hotelitos, handmade crafts and boutique shops. Beach lovers are mesmerized by glistening blue Caribbean waters dancing across Isla Holbox’s white sandy beaches. While those seeking an eco-vacation come to Isla Holbox for its biolumisecent waters, bird watching, whale sharks and cenotes. In fact, seventy-five percent of the island is wild mangroves and untouched beaches.
Getting there
Getting to Isla Holbox from the mainland requires some pre-planning. Although there’s a tiny airport on the island for those traveling by private plane, most visitors arrive by boat from Port Chiquila, about a 2-3 hour drive north of Cancun. From there, reaching Isla Holbox is a quick 20-minute ferry ride.
